Tisbury town officials are asking residents to stay out of the Beach Road and Five Corners area in downtown Vineyard Haven overnight and into tomorrow in anticipation of another coastal storm making its way through the region.
“We are expecting a lot of rain again beginning around midnight tonight through tomorrow, Saturday Jan 13th,” a public notice reads on the town’s website. “Unless it is an emergency, there should be no reason to be risking a drive through here during a high-water event.”
The announcement comes following a storm on Tuesday evening into Wednesday when Five Corners, Water Street and areas of Beach Road experienced significant coastal flooding. The town reported that a dozen or so cars were damaged when trying to drive through the area and needed a tow.
The National Weather Service is predicting wind gusts to reach 55 miles per hour starting early Saturday morning. The service has issued a wind advisory from 1 am until 1 pm Saturday, with sustained Southeast winds up to 35 miles per hour. The service has also issued a coastal flood warning for Dukes Count.
The Steamship Authority is also warning of possible disruptions to their service, especially the Nantucket route, but also on the Vineyard route.

Nothing to see here kids– just move on.

Taming global temperatures is a monumental task, one that as a planet we are late pursuing, and thanks to the windmills, we are finally taking a concrete step forward! Thank you to everyone who is contributing to renewable energy in any form! If you have two solar panels on your roof, kudos to you!
Five Corners has been flooding through Climate Change, Global Warming, Nuclear Winter, the depletion of the Ozone Zone, Global Cooling and all the other scare tactics put forth by the true science deniers. It’s been flooding since it was a creek that was filled in many, many decades ago.
John– when did we have a nuclear
winter ? do you think that if thousands of
nuclear weapons went off in a short
period of time, it wouldn’t have an effect
on the global climate? Can you show me some
of the science that says it wouldn’t ?
And you know,– John, that bull ^&%$#%
about the “global cooling scare” is a flat out
fabricated lie that you continually spread.
You KNOW it’s a lie –John , But you
continually bring this crap up because
the argument against anthropomorphic
global warming is so weak you have nothing
but lies to defend your argument.
Do you even have the slightest clue
about what the ozone hole was and how
we fixed it ? The truly scary thing here
is that people like you think it’s fine to
lie to fit their narrative.
Pants on freaking fire. !
John Axel is correct.
Reporters told the public about global cooling in the 70’s in the same confident tone used in today’s coverage about global warming, creating the strong impression that no reasonable person could disagree. Here are some examples:
“The evidence in support of these predictions [global cooling] has now begun to accumulate so massively that meteorologists are hard-pressed to keep up with it.” The Cooling World“A study release last month by two NOAA scientists that the amount of sunshine reaching the ground in the continental U.S. diminished by 1.3% between 1964 and 1972.” The Cooling World “Telltale signs are everywhere…the thickness of the pack ice…the southward migration of warmth-loving creatures like the armadillo…” Another Ice Age? “Since the 1940s the mean global temperature has dropped about 2.7 degrees.” Another Ice Age? “The threat of a new ice age must now stand alongside nuclear war as a likely source of wholesale death and misery for mankind,” The Ice Age Cometh!
Critics will say there was no scientific consensus in the 1970s that the world was cooling, but that’s not how the media reported it to the public. Similarly, today some scientists want to debate global warming and its possible causes, but the media presents global warming as a settled issue, not to be questioned. Since the reporting today about world climate is the opposite of what it was 30 years ago, it’s ok to be skeptical about the worst predictions surrounding global warming.
Is it getting deeper and more often?
Why?
Why don’t they raise the roadway and area around there ?
Brenda–They actually could raise the roadway, but then
they would have to provide ramps going down to all the
businesses, and /or raise all the businesses. That would be
be a lot of money. I would posit that to mitigate flooding
from sea level issues at 5 corners and the area around there
could easily surpass a billion dollars. And there are issues
with other places on the island. How do we deal with all of it ?
It is clear that the anthropomorphically caused climate change
is an issue we cannot deal with on a local level.
It is naive to think that average citizens would ever think of
reducing their use of fossil fuels out of altruism. Nope– that’s
not the way humans work. We have to vote for people who
will make the hard choices and value the lives of our descendants
over our short term profit.
That is a One Hundred Million Dollar question.
Pony up.
