The Edgartown select board unanimously approved the promotion of Edgartown police officer Ryan Ruley to sergeant.
In the spring the Edgartown and Oak Bluffs police departments conducted a collaborative hiring process to test candidates through examination, a day long assessment center, and a hiring board.
Edgartown Police Chief Bruce McNamee said the departments had three in-house candidates go through the process and he recommended that Ruley be promoted to sergeant, taking the place of the recently retired Sgt. Jamie Craig.
Ruley is a 20 year veteran in law enforcement with the last eight years in Edgartown.
“You did a great job in the process and we’d be really happy to have you join us as a supervisor,” McNamee said to Ruley.
The board also congratulated Ruley and thanked McNamee for the “outstanding” appointment.
“I appreciate the confidence that you and the department has in me to take this next step in my career,” Ruley said.
Ruley will be officially sworn in Wednesday at 4 pm in front of the Edgartown police station.
